Industry Meets Artistry

PGH 040 dFab lab - CNC test

This image by Marius Waltz captures a unique angle on a piece of artwork that beautifully combines human artistry and manufacturing technology. Using benchtop CNC machining technology, an intricate pattern was milled into a sheet of Styrofoam. The elegant circular design expresses the artist’s unique creativity while the materials and production methods used are distinctly industrial. Shallow rings in varying dimensions intersect on this simple canvas to become an intricate geometric compilation that somewhat resembles crop circles. While this image is beautiful as is, it highlights an intermediary step in the development of a finished piece of art. The CNC milled Styrofoam is finished with color and texture to produce an eye catching wall hanging.
