Let’s be honest. Most close-ups of young children, provided they’re not crying or covered in boogers, are pretty adorable. Apart from making sure the photo’s not blurry or whatever, our reaction to most photos of kids has more to do with our hard-wired attitudes towards youth than any kind of photography skill. Still, there are exceptions to everything, and this photograph by Pratham Books is just that. This photo makes us feel a range of emotions and an almost visual obsession with the idea of innocence. It’s the pose, the expression, the textures, the lighting. This isn’t just a picture of a child. This is art.
