One of my favorite things about going to Japanese gardens is sitting near the pond and watching the Koi as they glide by, occasionally popping above the surface with their mouths open. The scene captured here is significantly more intense than the relaxing one I am used to. Fish are piled atop one another, coloring the depth of the water. Round mouths litter the surface, adding a sense of tension. Air! Food! We need it!
The framing of this shot is particularly good, putting the frenzied epicenter right in central focus. From there, the koi swirl in and out of the chaos, warm hues of orange and gold igniting the composition. The black fish add a touch of mystery, blending in with the water almost seamlessly.
