Whimsy on Ice

Beihai Park Beijing Ice Skating
In colder months, the large Taiye Pool at Beijing’s Beihai Park freezes over and attracts fun seekers of all ages. This photograph captures a quiet moment, with cluttered rows of skating chairs gathered near a shore. These chairs are equipped with blades and glide across the ice’s surface. The animals remind me of old playground equipment, molded shapes painted up in primary colors. They have been well-used, with their bases holding small piles of snow. Scratches on the pond’s surface reveal their most recent movements, when they were part of a fun afternoon with children laughing. Now they rest until the excitement starts all over again.
