I was drawn to this photograph immediately by its strong lines and motion. Set on the River Thames, London City Hall’s design lends itself to an appearance of movement; almost as if it is being struck by a harsh gust of wind. Coupled with the forward-moving pattern of the walkway bricks, the image takes the eye right to the entrance of City Hall, where business is happening (we can hope).
Lest we forget the glory of Tower Bridge in the background, glowing like a beacon and connecting the two banks of the Thames. The darkness of everything else in view – even the sky – feels less ominous with the Bridge’s soft lighting and castle-like features. The old and the new come together in this shot, both moving forward together with the city.
