I have a penchant for old neon signs. Alex Ford captured this photo in downtown Chicago and shared it with everyone via creative commons.
The framing of the shot is the first thing I noticed – it is spot-on. It also makes the viewer wonder what the rest of the sign say. The “ist’s” sounds so lively and classy, doesn’t it? We’ve also got the sad fate of most old things in America – the decay. A number of the globe bulbs appear dirty and worn, paint is chipping, and sections of neon are unlit. The mesh above also conjures up images of pigeons and other urban vermin. We can only hope this is part of a normal wear process that will be addressed in time. For now, it adds great character to the photograph and provides us with a nice little piece of history.
